Sun and Moon Originals began making the Cosmic Cushion in 1990. Now 35 years later the carefully crafted features of its breakthrough design continue to offer amazing comfort to meditators everywhere. That long-lasting comfort flows out of three core elements embedded in the cushions simple contours, as shown in the photo below:

Overall wedge shape places your knees lower than your pelvis to support an upright open posture without the slumping to quickly tires out the muscles of your upper body

Tapering “wings” provide continuous support for your thighs all the way down to the floor. The seamless contact avoids the restlessness a sudden drop-off causes.

Central Heel Cradle allows you to pull your feet in close to your torso putting less stress on the joints of your knees and ankles
and reducing the tendency for your legs and feet to fall asleep.

Our customers consistently praise the ingenious design of the Cosmic Cushion’s design and how much better their meditations sessions are when using one. (link to testimonials here)

Cosmic Cushions come in 3 sizes – regular loft, low loft and oversize plus travel size and one especially for kids. They are either filled with buckwheat hulls or stuffed with kapok fiber. Our FAQs will help you choose the best size and our materials page describes the differences between the buckwheat hulls and kapok fiber fillings.

The Cosmic Cushion is our own patented breakthrough design and has meditators raving! The Cosmic Cushion’s three core features work in harmony to provide supreme comfort during meditation. This cushion’s wedge profile tilts the pelvis slightly forward, helping you maintain the proper forward curve in your lower back while meditating. The Cosmic Cushion’s tapering wings support the entire length of your thighs, and this even weight distribution eliminates restlessness and keeps your legs from falling asleep. The curved heel cradle is tailored to fit either heel snugly, allowing you to draw your feet in close to your torso, minimizing stress to your hips and knees.

Comes in five sizes:

* Regular Loft– by far the most popular choice. Measures: 22″x15″x6.5″.

* Low loft– a good choice for veteran, flexible, or petite sitters. Measures: 22″x15″x4.5″

* Oversize– for tall, larger framed sitters w/ limited flexibility. Fits people 6′ or taller. Measures 24″x16″x7.5″

* Travel– Slightly lower and with truncated legs for easier storage in a bag.

Measures 19″x13″x4.5″

* Kids– Measures 19.5″x12″x3″

Built to last! The Cosmic Cushion is stuffed with either prime kapok or buckwheat hull, both natural and biodegradable fillings. Kapok is lighter and easier to carry, and gives firm, buoyant support. Buckwheat conforms to your contours for a more grounded feeling. The Deluxe Cosmic Cushion has a cotton muslin inner casing and a zippered slipcover that removes for convenient washing.

Choosing the Cosmic Cushion TM best suited to you –

Every human body has a unique conformation whose postural dynamics need to be honored when selecting a meditation cushion for floor sitting.

Cosmic Cushions are made in four distinct sizes, plus one sized especially for kids. All of them incorporate the same core features of the ergonomic design but have differing proportions. Making a thoughtful choice ensures you’ll receive the full benefit of the Cosmic Cushion’s uniquely crafted shape.

How you answer these questions should help you determine the size that best meets your needs for stable and comfortable support when you sit in meditation. You should feel drawn deeper within and able to focus steadily on your breathing without the distraction physical discomfort causes.

What’s Your Height?

A taller person usually prefers a higher loft cushion. Here are the measurements at the back of each size:

  • Low Loft Cosmic Cushion: 4 – 5 1/2 inches high. For people 5’ – 5’ 6” tall
  • Regular Loft Cosmic Cushion: 6 – 7 inches high. For those 5’ 7” – 5’ 10” tall
  • Oversize Cosmic Cushion: 7 ½ – 8 1/2 inches high. For those 5’10” and above
  • Travel Cosmic: 4 1/2 – 5 inches high. Similar in height but to the Low Loft but has a slightly steeper slope due to its smaller footprint. Someone using a Regular Loft Cosmic Cushion at home will find the Travel Cosmic works well for shorter sitting sessions.
  • Kids Cosmic: 3 – 3 ½” high. Suits children from 5 – 10 years in age up to

What’s Your Flexibility?

In general, if you are more flexible, you can sit comfortably on a lower cushion. If your flexibility is more limited, choose a higher cushion. We have found that people can often sit in comfort a little lower on a Cosmic Cushion than on another cushion because their weight gets distributed more evenly and less stress is placed on your hip, knee and ankle joints due to the ergonomics of the cushions design. If you find you fit somewhere in the middle between two sizes, you might consider the lower one. Also, as you continue sitting your muscles and tendons gradually relax and adjust over time to a lower cushion height. Of course, if you have joint issues, a higher cushion can work to your advantage.

Which Cushion Filling Do You Prefer? – Buckwheat Hulls or Kapok Fiber?

Buckwheat hulls are a loose granular filling that tends to have a lower height than the       same cushion stuffed with kapok fiber. You can easily remove hulls via a short zipper sewn into the inner casing to make the cushion feel softer or to lower its height some. Buckwheat hulls cushions don’t change much from when you first use them on day one.

Kapok fiber stuffed cushions need a breaking in period. Right out of the box, the cushion has a domed top and rounded lateral portions. Either by sitting on the cushion or by using your elbows or knees to press down firmly, some of the air trapped between the fibers gets squeezed or kneaded out and the stuffing gets pushed out into the seams of the inner casing. A more gradual, barely noticeable flattening of the cushion that happens in response to how much time you spend sitting on it.

What have you been sitting before when meditating? What worked and what didn’t, holds valuable insight when choosing a new meditation cushion. Perhaps you sat on a chair, but you’d like to try sitting on the floor. You used a meditation bench perhaps, but it felt unstable and placed excess pressure onto your knees than you’d like. If it was a bench or another type of cushion or pillow, taking a measurement of the height at its highest point off the floor can provide a useful point of reference. Also, how firm was it? How soft? Did you sink down? How much? Did you feel stable? How comfortable was it for you? What was lacking to make it better suited for you?
